Obertauern is one of the best, snow sure and high altitude skiing resorts in Austria. With 100km of pistes and a short transfer from Salzburg, it is an intermediates paradise. The village of Obertauern is surround by the spectacular Radstädter Tauern mountain range that reaches an eye watering 2526m, providing some amazing scenery.
There are 100km of slopes, with all of them leading back to the village, so there is much ski in ski out accommodation in this resort. It is also home to Austria’s second steepest black run, which runs along side the Gamsleitein 2 lift. All of the slopes are well planed and routed, this allows all of the 26 ski lifts to be interconnecting and provides and extensive ski area around the “Tauernrunde Circuit”. This resort is a very special place and suits all levels of skier. We have a good selection of Obertauern ski holiday packages where you can fly from your local regional airport on offer.
The village was created in the year 1207 and there are still some buildings from the year 1517. Skiing was introduced to the village in 1902 and has since grown to be one of Austria’s most popular ski resorts. Also in 1965 it filmed part of the Beatles film “Help”.
Thanks to the great design of the lift and piste system we have many ski in ski out properties over our great selection of Obertauern hotels at some very reasonable prices. Please call our experts and see what we can find you in Obertauern.

Obertauern is one of the highest ski resorts in Austria, and is also one of the most snow sure. There are 100km of immaculacy groomed high altitude pistes and has long been a favourite with the Austrians. The modern lift and piste system has been well designed to create the “Tauernrunde Circuit”, an extensive and interconnected ski area that runs around the village and all routes lead back to the village.
There is a good choice of beginner runs, with a wonderful nursery slope right by the village, and thanks to Obertauern extensive snow record, snow is ensured. For beginners there is also the “green circuit” (just follow the green signs) that runs anticlockwise and involves 5 lifts including the Zehnerkarspitz cable car, these runs are known for there gentle slopes.
Obertauern is an intermediates paradise thanks to the well-designed Tauernrunde Circuit if you go clockwise and follow the red signs, it will take you round the “red circuit”. These trails are over 30km long and can be approached from three different routes, which gives 90km (57 miles) of intermediate tracks.
For experts Obertauern has the second steepest run in Austria that runs along the Gamsleitein 2 lift. There are 5 black runs and some testing mogul field. Thanks again to the design of the slopes, there are some fantastic off piste opportunities.
Obertauern has been a popular après ski hot spot since the Beatles filmed their film “Help” in 1965. Après ski normally begins with a glass of glühwein or jägertee in one of the many bars located at the base of the slopes. Popular bars include the Stubn or Latschn that often has table dancing and live music.
The most popular bar in town is the Gasthof Taverne where it is busy all evening. The Lérzeralm is one of the four nightclubs for the night owls.
