Bansko has long been a favorite for learner skiers, families and group ski holidays that are on a budget. Unlike many other European resorts it offers great value ski packs (hire, lessons and Pass) at some exceptional prices prefect for those feeling the credit crunch.
The Resort is situated at 930m and the highest lift is at 2560m. With its 65km of slopes and a reliable season running form December to April, and has the best snow record in Bulgaria, it really is a resort not to be missed this winter.
Parents will find perfect conditions for their little ones, as there are some great nursery slopes at the top of the gondola with little through traffic. The blue pistes are tree lined and gentle and are served by a draglift with many long routes down.
This resort is great for intermediates there are a good choice of medium to difficult red runs. There are 4 or 5 main routes down the 900m vertical decent from the top to choose form. The Stara Pista, Todorka, Shiligarnika and Plato ski runs are all suitable for intermediate skiers. The Stara Pista is also floodlit for nighttime skiing.
None of the ski resorts in Bulgaria are thought of as being ideal for advanced skiers which is mainly down to the limited amount of runs on offer compared to the larger ski area on offer in the Alps and in North America. However, As much as Bansko is not a haven for skiers who have been skiing for year, it still have a bit to offer if you are an experienced skier and are looking for a cheap ski holiday. There is plenty of off piste to be found and some brilliant tree lined runs and for thise looking for some frestyle action the snow park on offer should be enough to get the adrenaline going.
Many of the slopes are wide and gentle great to learn the basics on. Or if your more experienced there is a new half pipe that is the only one in Bulgaria why not have a go?
Bansko après ski is great! It has a great mix of being a modern resort and a rustic town with a local population of around 10,00 people. Popular choices include Harrys bar, which is close to the bottom of the gondola. For the night owls why not try Amnesia, the local nightclub which has great music and an outstanding atmosphere.
