Skiing holidays in Sauze d'Oulx offer a huge amount of skiing in a high altitude ski region with a great après ski vibe to top it all off. On top of this, the lift pass is one of the best-priced lift tickets in the whole of the Alps and there are some great value for money package holiday deals to be had as well. If you are looking for great value from your ski holiday but don't want to sacrifice on the amount of skiing that you can do or the likelihood of quality snow then looks no further than Sauze.
The ski region that Sauze d'Oulx is situated within is called the Milky Way and in total there is roughly 400km of piste that can be skied. It is also a high altitude ski region and Sauze has a resort height of 1509m with skiing all the way up to 2800m. In 2006 many of the events for the Turin Winter Olympics were held here and there was a significant investment in the infrastructure and lift system. This means that the majority of the lifts are modern and high speed so access to the full 400km of piste could not be easier.
Sauze d'Olux has a reputation as a party town and this is definitely a reputation that it lives up too. However, as the resort has developed over the years it has maintained its original character and charm and if you are not looking for a week of partying then it is very easy to avoid whilst having a relaxing week and enjoying the beauty of the area. Sauze d'Oulx is also well known for its reasonably priced accommodation, restaurants and pizzerias so if you are trying to keep down the costs then a skiing holiday in Sauze could be ideal for what you are looking for. The skiing in Sauze d'Olux and the Milky Way is suitable for all abilities but is probably most suited to intermediate/upper intermediate skiers with a coverage of almost 55% red runs throughout the region. However, there is plenty of skiing for those at either end of the ability spectrum as well, with 25% of the runs in the area being blue and 20% being black. The 400km of piste that is on offer seems almost endless when right in the thick of it there is loads of opportunity for all types of skiing be it freestyle, off piste or just gentle cruising. The skiing ranges from roughly 1500m all the way up to about 2800m giving you access to high altitude slopes with guaranteed snow during the winter months as well as beautiful tree liked skiing on the lower slopes.
The beginner skiing in Sauze d'Oulx is focused around two main areas, the nursery slope the absolute beginners will learn the ropes on is at village level, at the base of the Clotes chair lift. However, the majority the beginner skiing in Sauze d'Oulx is to be found radiating from Sportina which is a plateau half way up the mountain, just above the village. Itis easily reached via a four man chairlift and is where most of the teaching in Sauze takes place.
The intermediate skiing in Sauze d'Oulx is mainly focused around the Monte Triplex and the red runs that link up with Rocce Nere but all of the skiing in Sauze is breat for intermediates. More adventurous skiers will no doubt want to purchase the full area lift pass so that they can benefit from the full 400km of piste that is on offer by linking over to Sansicario and Sestriere as well as even further field to Claviere and even Montgenevre on the French side of the border.
Advanced skiing in Sauze d'Oulx can be found in the Moncrons and the Genevris areas but as with intermediates most advanced skiers will want to make the most of the full Milky Way lift pass. Take the Bassett chair over towards Sestriere and Sansicario to test your skills and nerve on 'Kandahar', the World Championship run in Sestriere as well as the long red runs that head down towards Sansicario.
There is great off piste skiing in Sauze d'Oulx in the Genevris area and there are also some great off piste tree runs to be found on the lower slopes. However if you want to make the most of the off piste skiing in Sauze then hire and guide who can show you the amazing lines that descend roughly 1300m from the top of Fratieve.
Snowboarding in Sauze D'Olux is great fun for boarders of all abilities and the varied terrain as well as access to 5 snow parks in the Milky Way area also makes Sauze a great resorts for boarders who like all types of snowboarding. From snowboarders who love shredding pistes to powder hounds who aren't happy unless there is two foot of fresh snow, all the way to park junkies who love kickers and rails. You name it Sauze has it.
The snow park in Sause has a half pipe as well as the aforementioned kickers and rails so all disciplines are covered. You can even buy a reduced rate park specific lift pass in Sauze so if you no you are only going to ride park all day there is no need to waste money on a full area lift pass.
The après ski in Sauze d'Oulx is one of the main reasons that skiers and snowboarders alike flock to the resort year after year. Sauze has a reputation for being a resort with plenty of après ski venues and loads of late night parties, and this is a reputation that it certainly lives up too. If you want to ski all day and party all night then Sauze could be the place for you. However, if you want to avoid the bright lights and the late nights then it is pretty easy to do so as the nightlife and apres ski is not right in your face, like it is in some other resorts.
One of the favourite venues with British guests is the Max Bar with its satalite TV and live football. For a more of a cultured experience head to the Gran Trun wine bar or go for cocktails at Moncrons.
